Antarctica, the fifth largest of earth’s continents, is the coldest, highest, windiest and driest of all continents. Located as it is, underlying the south pole, is one of the reasons it is among the world’s coldest regions. In fact Antarctica is almost entirely covered by ice, averaging 1.6 km in thickness. As this continent has about 90% of the world’s ice it goes without saying this is where you will find around 70% of the world’s fresh water. No wonder Antarctica is often known as the Great White Continent! The lowest temperature ever recorded anywhere on earth, -89.2°C, was recorded on July 21, 1983, at the Russian owned Vostok Station. Unconfirmed reports suggest that lower recordings have been made since.

As long as there have been mountains man has been fascinated by them, whether for the purpose of exploration, climbing, skiing, or just feeling literally “on top of the world.” And whilst the main thing many of us might think about with mountains is climbing up them, the activities we can engage in are as varied as the mountains themselves. The only limit is that which we place upon ourselves. And it’s this that makes a mountain holiday so perfect.
Certainly not everyone’s idea of a good holiday is going off to hot, sunny destinations, spending time lazing about on the beach. A mountain holiday offers a number of things that cannot be enjoyed elsewhere. And nowadays it is so easy to travel from one country to another, even hopping from one continent to another, that the pleasures of a mountain holiday can easily be found. And, although it is probably true to say that skiing is one of the main leisure pursuits looked for in a mountain holiday, there is much more to enjoy besides travelling down the side of a mountain on skis.
